CHAPTER SEVEN

Several days passed and Amanda did not hear either from Clive or Red. She could not help being wryly amused that both of the men in her life should have gone out of it at the same time. Not that Red had totally disappeared, for though he did not call her, he regularly telephoned the nursing-home to enquire about her mother's health. Perhaps he had grown tired of her, she mused, when the fifth day came and went without a word from him. He was good-looking enough not to be short of girl-friends.

Resolutely she concentrated on thoughts of Clive. Not that she could ever picture him as a boy-friend; the word evoked someone younger and gayer. Perhaps marriage would make him more light-hearted. Guiltily she pushed away the hope knowing it was unwise to expect marriage to change a person. One either accepted them as they were or one didn't marry them.

Clive was still very much in her mind when she left the nursing-home that night, and he came closer still when she met the specialist whom he had asked to look after her mother.

'My secretary has been trying to contact you this afternoon,' Sir Duncan Willis said.

'Is anything wrong?' Amanda asked nervously.

'Not at all. Your mother will be well enough to leave here at the end of the week. That's why I wanted to talk to you.'

'That's wonderful news!'

Sir Duncan smiled. 'I'm not keen on her remaining in London for the rest of the winter. Her chest is still weak and I would like her to spend a couple of months in a warmer climate.'

'We can't afford it, I'm afraid. In the normal course of events my mother wouldn't even have come here.'

'I realise that.' Sir Duncan hesitated, then said abruptly: 'Mr. Brand spoke to me about your mother before he went away. I told him what I've just told you, and he asked me to make any arrangements that were necessary.'

'What sort of arrangements?'

'For your mother to go to a nursing home in Tangier. It's run by nuns and I was able to recommend it personally.'

'It's out of the question,' Amanda said sharply. 'We can't afford it.'

'Mr. Brand is meeting all the expenses,' Sir Duncan said smoothly. 'I'm surprised he didn't tell you before he left.'

'He never said a word.'

'Some people find it difficult to talk of such things. He is a most generous man.'

'I know,' she said huskily, 'and it puts me under an awful obligation.'

'I'm sure that's the last thing in the world he would want. Your mother isn't the first person he has helped, you know.'

Amanda was astonished. Clive had been exceptionally generous, but his fastidious and phlegmatic personality did not conjure up a picture of someone who haphazardly bestowed largesse on the world.

'I'm referring in the main to his concern for his staff,' Sir Duncan went on. 'And if he's generous to those who work for him, you shouldn't be surprised if he's equally so with you.'

Amanda coloured and the consultant smiled. 'You would be wise to accept Mr.
